What you’ll find on Italian at Heart
The ultimate goal of Italian at Heart is to connection – to our food, its source, & each other.
We believe that cooking for others is an expression of love. We want to share our joy of cooking and gathering around the table with others through our blog. We hope you’ll join us at the table!
Traditional Italian Recipes: We love using the highest quality ingredients and cooking traditional recipes from scratch. We want to share the best of traditional, regional Italian cuisine in English with US measurements so that anytime you miss Italy, you can go back in a bite.
Italianized American Recipes: We like to put a fun Italian twist on American classics. “Italianizing” an American recipe might mean either (1) making a recipe entirely from scratch, or (2) using authentic Italian ingredients or methods to make a traditionally American dish.
Wine Pairings: The right wine paired with the right recipe can take a dining experience from delicious to heavenly. Kelly received her WSET Level 2 certificate in 2018. We’ll include suggested wine pairings for most of our recipes.

Italian at heart was founded by Kelly, an American girl, and Alberto, an Italian boy. It all started with a pizza recipe. Actually, it probably started long before then.
Back in 2000, Alberto studied abroad in California as a junior in high school. He discovered cheerleaders there, so he never wanted to return to Italy (his mother, however, wanted him to return immediately!).
At the same time, Kelly was a high school cheerleader in Nevada…just a state away.
But they didn’t meet.
Alberto was a student at the Universita’ degli Studi di Padova.
Meanwhile, Kelly studied Italian at the Universita’ degli Studi di Torino. She realized that what Americans call “Italian” food isn’t Italian at all….and she wanted to stay in this food paradise forever.
They still didn’t meet.
Fast forward 10 years later. Kelly and Alberto were craving a bit of their past experiences abroad, especially speaking the language with a native. And so they finally met through a language exchange.
They bonded over a love of Monterey, California, cats, and cooking (and eating, let’s be honest)! The very first recipe Alberto shared with Kelly was a pizza recipe. She had just returned from Italy and wanted to make her own pizza from scratch in her family’s new pizza oven. And that’s how Italian at Heart was born.
These days, Kelly is the main face & content creator of Italian at Heart, and Alberto makes sure that all the tech runs smoothly behind the scenes.
